The Afghani Bassmasters
A Tribute to our Canadian Military Bassmasters Serving Overseas
Petawawa Ontario: Site of a Canadian Military Base since 1905. It is also the site of one of the Ontario BASS Federations most active clubs – the Petawawa Bassmasters. What makes these men unique among most other Canadian Bassmasters? They are all members of our Canadian Military and they frequently find themselves sacrificing all the things in life that we hold so dear (like leaving family and bass fishing behind for six months) to serve our great country overseas.

For what could be a first in the Canadian publishing world, a fishing magazine is honouring not one but three Canadian BassWomen on their latest front cover. BassMan Magazine is proud to include Quinte Bassmaster Ashley Rae – winner of the World Fishing Network’s Adopt an Angler contest, Crystal Brown the 2009 Renegade Bass Tournament Series Classic Champ and young Sierra Voisin – the 2009 World Casting Kids Champion – all on the front cover. “ All three ladies are great ambassadors for the Canadian bass fishing community and we are privileged to have them on the Winter issue of BassMan magazine,” says Tracy Kay, associate publisher.
The cover is only the beginning of good things in this issue. We have an in-depth interview with Ashley Rae, and how she won this contest and the $10,000 dream fishing trip that went along with it. We write all about Sierra’s Casting Kids win in Florida this past fall and have Tim Allards’s complete coverage of the 2009 Renegade Tournament Series - highlighted by Crystal’s Classic win.
Something For Everybody:
Readers are sure to enjoy a great new section we started on “What the Pro’s Say”. In this segment we explore the intricate details of the various types of fishing line on the market ... and asked two US Bass Pro’s and two Canadians to explain their choice of braid, mono or floro ... for various conditions. If you were ever unsure which line is the best tool for the job – be sure to read this detailed article over carefully once or twice. If the knowledge on line choice that eight time Bassmaster Classic Qualifier Bernie Schultz and former Bassmaster Classic winner Takahiro Omori offer from south of the border isn’t enough, then that offered by Canadians Mike Desforges and Jon Bondy surely will be.
We have an exciting destination feature describing a trip I took earlier this year to la Reserve Beauchene in Quebec ... Here along with Ontario BASS Federation Nation Youth Director Gerry Heels we enjoyed a great pres-season bass fishing adventure at this world class fishing resort. For those who think fly fishing for bass is not on their horizon ... they may want to re-think that notion after they read Jeff Holmlund’s “Poetry in Motion” article. Tournament anglers are sure to get a kick out of Chris Hockley’s piece focussing on some of the near misses of well know tournament anglers like Bob Izumi, Mike Desforges and several others. Dr Maw provides an inspirational article about an eight year old bass fishing enthusiast who caught the biggest bass of his life just after he finished chemotherapy treatment and a couple of blood transfusions.
BassMan Regular Features:
Of course we have our popular regular features too: This issue’s Bass Biologist highlights the work of Dr Bruce Tufts from Queens University – and shows the passion for his research is only matched by his love of bass fishing. We profile a pro angler in every issue too ... and this time we chose well known Fishing and Hunting TV Show host – Cam Brownson of Angler & Hunter TV. We offer readers a complete News Section (with details on the BPS Lake Simcoe Open, the Junior World Bassmaster Championships and so much more) and a new Bass Book review feature ... All in all we trust that we are not just living up to our mantra of Canada’s only All Bass, All The Time magazine, but that we are becoming a must read for all bass anglers across the planet regardless of where they come from .
A subscription to BassMan Magazine makes a great Christmas gift for your favorite angler. You can pick up the latest issue at your closest Chapters Store – or at several variety shops . Of course, you can also subscribe online thru our site at: www.bass-man.com and receive a year’s subscription for just $19.99. BassMan is proud to SUPPORT OUR TROOPS with our free online edition and website membership – open to all members of Canada’s military, police and firefighter services.
On behalf of everyone at BassMan, I’d like to wish all of you a wonderful Christmas season and hope that 2010 brings with it joy, happiness and big beautiful bass ... the latter will surely help deliver the former!
Thank you,
Wil Wegman

Major Canadian Collegiate Bass Tournament in Works for 2010 Bass Season
Sept. 30, 2009
After the success of starting and running the first Canadian college fishing team, Matt Pezzetta will be bringing the first “Collegiate Fishing Event” to Canadian waters. Pezzetta, who is currently attending Conestoga College in the Bachelor of Architecture Project and Facility Management program, states,
“Being a student, it is easy for me to identify the limitations and issues that students may encounter on their way to fish a high profile tournament. By identifying these limitations, I can, hook and tackle them (pun intended), to make competing in a tournament achievable for everyone.”
The event is going to take place in the central Kawarta Lakes region. This is a very diverse fishery for both large and small mouth bass. The tournament will be held early to mid August in the 2010 fishing season. In order to compete, participants must be a full time or part time student registered in a post secondary institution in Canada. The maximum number of students per team is two, with the option to register as an individual. Students in a team of two must both be registered in the same school. There is no set maximum to the number of individuals or teams that can be entered per school.
Why is it called a Fishing Event?
The tournament will be only one day, but other events will be taking place over a two day period. Other events include a college/ university fair intertwined with a fishing trade show, skills competition, launching, and champions ceremonies. There will be something for everyone, including anglers and audience.
Boater Program
The support of local anglers and pro staff is 100% essential to this event. The biggest obstacle with a collegiate angler is the availability of a boat and the cost of running one. Local anglers and pro-staff are encouraged to support this unique event by bringing their boat, be a driver as well as a scrutineer. This will cost the team a gas surplus charge on top of their entry fee but in the end, it will be cheaper than bringing a boat. There will be a lottery draft for pairing the college anglers and their boaters. After the draft, there is a 4 hour on water consulting session with the boater and the collegiate anglers that have been drafted. The volunteer boaters are welcome to participate in the skills competition.
The Payout
The number of payout spots will be determined by the number of entries received. On an outline basis the breakdown will be as follows.
- 1st Place Team- 55% of total+ prizes
- 2nd Place Team- 20% of total+ prizes
- 3rd Place Team- 15% of total+ prizes
- 4th Place Team- 10% of total+ prizes
- 5th Place Team- Prizes
Overall, school champions prize to be determined by the number of booths filled for the college fair + Prizes.
This event is a one of a kind experience, and its success is dependent upon our generous sponsors and volunteers!
All inquiries can be directed to Matt Pezzetta and the Conestoga Fishing Team at conestoga_bass@hotmail.com or keep an eye on the Big Fat Bass Forum in the Collegiate Fishing section. |
